hys·ter·e·sis
/ histə rēsis/
noun (physics)

the phenomenon in which the value of a physical property lags behind changes in the effect that is its cause.

Hysteresis is the dependence of the state of a system on its history. A magnet may have more than one possible magnetic moment in a given magnetic field, depending on how that field changed in the past—its induction may lag behind its magnetizing force. Plots of a single component of the moment often form a loop or hysteresis curve, where different values of one variable depend on the direction of change of another. This history dependence is the basis of memory in a hard disk drive in the present and the remanence that retains a record of the Earth's magnetic field magnitude in the past.
